“Pinwheel gardens have popped up around Redding in April to mark National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
“One of the sparkling displays recently was planted in front of the Win-River Mini Mart at Eastside and South Bonnyview roads. Other Pinwheel Gardens of Hope appeared outside the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office on Park Marina Circle and the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office on West Street.
“The display outside the mini mart featured 753 pinwheels to represent the number of substantiated cases of child abuse in Shasta County during 2019, according to Michael Burke, the executive director of Pathways to Hope for Children.
“‘Since 2016 child abuse rates in Shasta County have been going up at an alarming rate. In 2019 our county had 3,514 reports of child abuse and 753 of those reports were substantiated cases of child abuse resulting in 304 removals from the home,’ according to Burke.”
